Chain Reactor

Montreal Biennale

Completed 2002

A steel frame carrying one kilometer of recycled harbour chain was constructed in the old town of Montreal. Space contains a fireplace and four benches made of solid sandstone. Firewood is stored under the benches.

The work is based on a simple experience: Sitting around the fire, enjoying the warmth and watching the flames are part of common memory. Stories are told by the fireplace and the fragrance is carried secretly in suits and ties into high technology and banking offices around, into elevators of the high-rise buildings.
